Photoinitiators are chemicals that release reactive molecules under ultraviolet radiation. Photoinitiators are used in a wide range of products, including plastics, paints, inks and adhesives, as well as in everyday objects and medical products and tools, such as dental fillers and containers.
Recently, studies have shown that photoinitiators are harmful to human health. There are concerns about the use of photoinitiator related compounds in clinical devices, often used to treat high-risk cancer patients. Previous studies have shown that three photoinitiators commonly found in plastics and coatings, 1-HCHPK, MBB and MTMP, have estrogen-like effects on breast cancer cells, which can cause breast cancer cell proliferation.
It has also been suggested that 1-HCHPK, MBB and MTMP have estrogen-like activity and thus can cause hormonal interference. This interference affects not only breast cancer patients, but also healthy people. The study sheds new light on photoinitiators and breast tumors, and has implications for eliminating toxic materials from medical devices.
